On ne peut pas parler du street art à Bristol sans évoquer le quartier de Stokes Croft où l'on trouve la plus grande concentration de street art au mètre carré. Officiellement quartier malfamé, Stokes Croft est devenu un lieu culturel incontournable de la scène bristolienne, non seulement grâce aux pièces de street art qu'on peut y trouver mais parce que la volonté et le soutien des habitants ont permis de créer des projets localement.

It's hard to talk about street art in Bristol without evoking Stokes Croft, the quarter which has, without a doubt, the most street art per square foot. Seen by some as a rough part of town, Stokes Croft is now fast becoming a cultural hub and not only because of the street art that can be found there but also because of the solidarity and willingness of the local residents to make things happen.

Il faut préciser que Stokes Croft est un territoire indépendant ayant la particularité d'être autogéré par les Peoples Republic of Stokes Croft depuis 2008, une association  fondée et dirigée par Chris Chalkley qui encourage la liberté d'expression et l'activisme artistique. C'est donc naturellement que les street artistes locaux dont Sepr, Cheo, 3Dom, Paris et plein d'autres ont investi les murs du quartier, sachant qu'ils auraient carte blanche.

It must be said that Stokes Croft has the particularity of almost being a self contained district in that it is self-managed since 2008 by the Peoples Republic of Stokes Croft (PRSC), an organisation founded and run by Chris Chalkley that encourages free expression and cultural activism. Naturally this has greatly encouraged local artists such as Sepr, Cheo, 3Dom, Paris and many others to come and paint its walls, knowing that very often they would have total freedom to do so.

Néanmoins, l'aspect délabré de Stokes Croft avec ses bâtiments abandonnés et ses boutiques fermées est ce qui a initialement attiré les street artistes. Les pièces emblèmatiques d'artistes comme Banksy et Burning Candy ont sans aucun doute contribué à la notoriété de Stokes Croft. "Mild Mild West" de Banksy est probablement la plus connue, mais celle de Burning Candy (Rowdy, Sweet Toof et Cyclops) est certainement la plus impressionnante à cause de l'échelle et de sa localisation. Elle est située sur les hauteurs d'un bloc d'anciens bureaux abandonnés depuis 1986 (Westmoreland House) et surplombe la ville.

But even before the presence of PRSC, Stokes Croft was already a coveted spot for street artists, no doubt attracted by the painting spots offered by the many boarded up facades and abandoned buildings. Two of the Croft's most iconic pieces, which no doubt contributed greatly to the areas notoriety, were painted on derelict buildings. Banksy's 'Mild Mild West' mural is probably the best known, but Burning Candy's (Rowdy, Sweet Toof & Cyclops) piece is certainly the most impressive due to its scale and positioning. It sits high up on the roof of Westmoorland House and is visible from some distance.

L'identité culturelle de Stokes Croft a été menacée à plusieurs reprises par des projets de rénovations mais ces tentatives ont toujours avortées en raison de l'opposition des habitants et des défenseurs du quartier. Là encore il est question d'implanter un supermarché Tesco (l'équivalent de notre Carrouf' national). En réaction, The people of Republic of Stokes Croft ont produit ce gigantesque mural collectif qui incite à faire opposition au projet auprès de la mairie et à favoriser les commerces locaux. L'autorisation de peindre a été donné par l'association Love Bristol et l'œuvre est signée par les artistes Sepr pour le personnage et Epok pour le lettrage.

The integrity of Stokes Croft has been put under threat at various points by renovation projects but so far none of these have succeeded thanks to the defiance of the local residents and those who feel strongly about the area. Recently though there have been plans to build a Tesco supermarket in the area. In reaction, The Peoples Republic of Stokes Croft created a giant mural stating that 97% of locals were opposed and calling for people to attend an organised protest. The mural was painted by Sepr (character) and Epok (lettering), permission was granted by Love Bristol.

Comme promis, Mind the Wall aggrandit sa collection de t-shirts. Au menu des artistes tels que Will Barras, Xenz, Eco, Paris Hair et Pinky. Tous issus de la scène street art bristolienne et londonienne, ils ont chacun développé leur propre style. Ils ont participé à des expositions et évènements à l'échelle internationale, notamment en Europe, aux Etats-Unis et au Japon pour certains d'entre eux.

As promised, Mind the Wall is expanding its range of tshirts. New designs are by Will Barras, Xenz, Eco, Paris Hair and Pinky, all of whom have been involved in the street art scene in either Bristol or London. These renowned artists have all participated in exhibition and events internationally, most notably in Europe, the United States and even Japan for some of them.

The tshirts are handprinted and include the artist's signature on the lower right corner. They can now be ordered from our online shop, but there are very few of each available and some sizes have already sold out, so if there is something that you like I wouldn't hang around too long.

Après les rues de Bordeaux et d'Espagne où l'on a pu voir entre autre des séries de poulets, un caliméro et un avis de recherche pour son chat prénommé Ernest, Mr Poulet s'attaque à l'Angleterre.

After pasting artwork in the streets of Bordeaux and Spain, which included a series of chickens, a caliméro and a wanted poster for his cat named Ernest, Mr Poulet pays (h)England a visit. 

C'est à Bristol que cette jeune petite poule a attéri plutôt qu'à Londres qui finalement n'était pas sa tasse de thé. Il faut dire aussi qu'il pleuvait des chats et des chiens et qu'elle n'avait pas envie d'être mouillée. La reine était très déçue de perdre une nouvelle recrue à Buckingham palace.

Bristol is his chosen location for this hen piece rather than London, which, as it turned out, wasn't his cup of tea. It must be said that it was also raining cats and dogs there, and he didn't fancy getting drenched. So sadly the Queen missed out on getting a new recruit for the Royal Guard.
